Our first weekend in Lisbon

During our first weekend in Lisbon we decided to check out two of the most famous tourist sites in Portugal, the Torre de Belém and the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. They are located close to each other, in the south-western corner of the city, along the River Tejo - a 15 minute tram ride from the downtown area of Lisbon.

Here are some photos...

Mosteiro dos Jerónimos

First we checked out the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos(Jerónimos Monastery). The tomb of Vasco de Gama is inside the cathedral.

Arches

Here is a look at some arches inside the monastery.

Do not pass go!

Nancy looking sad.

Torre de Belém

This is the Torre de Belém. UNESCO named the tower and the monastery a World Heritage Site. We spent a bit too much time enjoying the views of the river and eating a late lunch during the short walk to the tower, so when we tried to get in we found the doors had just been closed for the day. So we will have to come back another time to see the inside.

Belém Tower

A closer look at the tower. It is built out of limestone and has been standing for just shy of 500 years.

Praca de Comercio

At the end of the day we stopped by the Praca de Comercio (Commerce Square). This is located in the central downtown area of Lisbon, and where you can catch the bus or tram to the Belém area. You can see the river just in front of the square.

That is all for now. We'll have more soon.
